The English Civil War period hilt design to this sword is similar to hilt type 91 (c.1630 - 1650), as listed in A.V.B. Norman's book: The Rapier and Small-Sword.
This magnificent sword is in what can only be described as overall excellent condition and has a 94.5cm long, flattened diamond section blade, incised IN SOLINGEN in the short central fullers. Three inches back from the blade tip there is an historic crimp to one side of the blade, but it does not affect the integrity of the blade and is cosmetic only.
The semi-basket hilt is a characteristic transitional dish hilt with scalloped rim, pierced and chiselled with geometric designs and drawing up to the mid-point of the D-shaped knuckle guard, scroll quillon with two scroll supports secured to the dish.
There is an elongated reeded Ovoid pommel, a wire bound grip with Turk's heads. Second quarter 17th Century. Private collection number disc 17.
