Stunningly good painting. Elegant, antique, Continental, oil on Mahogany panel, of rustic-workers c.1880, who have gathered what appears to be corn and are resting along a wayside path where the father smokes a pipe. They depict almost certainly a father and his daughter. It has been beautifully painted by a very skilled hand. Could be Austrian, German or French. The rear of the chamfered, prepared, Mahogany panel bears an original label, that of W. Koller & Co. Wien (Vienna) artist's suppliers. The painting has been lacquered in antiquity, which is yellowing slightly and has darkened with age. It would probably benefit from a very light clean. The early 20th century frame is of good quality and heavy, with Gesso mouldings and gilt. The painting lies behind an antique glazed panel. It does not appear to be signed, but is in the style of Emile Munier (1840 - 1895) or Julien Dupre (1851 -1910). Size framed: 19" x 17".
